Function: What comes naturally to a form

Singer Memo-matic is a self generating drawing that explores purpose. I recognize purpose as the reason to do or make something but also as an abstract concept placed upon object, action or being by habitual thinking.

This research is primarily on process and how it's ‘doing’ and learning nature can generate itself. I look into what is influencing decisions and being the outcomes that are expected or deemed successful. It thinks about what affordances a process has when an outcome is not determined or not reachable to ask why and how we endure. The process Unknowing that comes from process

My initial research was exploring alternative ways of being by exploring the human non-human binary. It asked what being human is and what it meant to be a failing and successful human being. Humans have built societies and cultures to survive and also the self awareness to remain within them. Within these societies a conception of success and failure is formed and affects decision making and life paths. I wanted to step away from conceptions around success and failure and utilize the self awareness we have at our control to let the self define success and failure.

This project starts with a knitting machine, the Singer Memo Matic 324 to set a chain of self generating drawings off by responding to the action prompts to disassemble, record, interpret. I explore what unfamiliar spaces a drawing practice that embraces subject, mark, mark maker and environment can afford.
